"A man plays a song on his guitar as the sky watches and listens. The world is just pure black and all noise to him, except when he played the tunes of his purpose in life. It's his way of keeping his beloved wife, who sits still, listening to the music of her man, safe from this world."

An installation of new works by 20 artists as a response to Rizal’s legacy contextualized within prevalent crises of conflict and corruption. These works are framed within a constructed bantayog, a monument-like structure of panels where Rizal’s words of dedication in the Noli Me Tangere both serve to commemorate and place into question our notion of truth and idealism.

2008 ATENEO ART AWARDS: Zones of Influence:

NAMES OF SHORT-LISTED ARTISTS ANNOUNCED

The Ateneo Art Gallery, together with Asian Art News, Metro Society, Shangri-La Plaza, UnionBank  and YStyle of the Philippine Star are proud to announce that ten artists who featured in twelve exhibitions have been short-listed for the 2008 Ateneo Art Awards. The works of this year’s shortlisted artists exemplify a spirit of diversity, eschewing convention by producing innovative works in painting, video, installation, performance, assemblage and sculpture.

The short-listed artists are:

Poklong Anading for Fallen Map, 26 January – 14 February 2007, Magnet - Katipunan

Marina Cruz-Garcia for “Embodied Dolls” in Sungduan Extension, 17 August to 18 September 2007, Museum of Three Cultures, Cagayan de Oro;Embroidered Landscape of My Mother’s Life” in Philippine Art Awards, 25 October 2007; and Recollections, 1 - 18 February 2008, Art Informal

Kawayan De Guia for Incubator, 28 July - 19 August 2007, The Drawing Room

Christina Dy for Curtains Marching Carpet, 18 July – 4 August 2007, silverlens gallery

Lyra Garcellano for Short Stories, 13 September - 2 Oct 2007, Finale Art Gallery - Megamall

Robert Langenegger for Irish Bull of the Mother and Child, 23 Aug – 11 Sept 2007, Finale Art Gallery - Megamall

Mark Salvatus for Wrapped, 31 May - 11 June 2007, National Art Studio, Goyang, South Korea

Rachel Rillo for Manila, 13 February to 8 March 2008, Silverlens Gallery

Mac Valdezco for The 8th, , 8 April - 3 May 2008, Avellana Art Gallery

Mark Valenzuela for War Zone, 7 - 31 July 2007, Galleria Duemila

The finalists were arrived at by the 2008 Ateneo Art Awards Jury after going through over 130 nominations. Each artist, a Filipino citizen and aged 35 years or under by 31 May 2008, was nominated for a solo or group exhibition in any public venue held between 2 May 2007 and 1 May 2008.

Usually twelve, the number of short-listed artists this year was trimmed to ten as Marina Cruz-Garcia was cited by the Jury for her work in three exhibitions. It is also her second time to be short-listed in the Ateneo Art Awards, the first time being in 2006. Three other artists have also appeared previously on the Awards short-list:  Poklong Anading, 2006 Ateneo Art Awards winner, Mac Valdezco and Yasmin Sison.

Underscoring the national scope of the Awards, first-time nominees Kawayan De Guia and Mark Anthony Valenzuela hail from Baguio and Dumaguete respectively.  Rounding out this year’s best are Lyra Garcellano, Robert Langenegger, Christina Dy and Mark Salvatus whose work in painting, installation, performance and video signify the diversity of Philippine contemporary visual art practice.

From the short-list, the Jury will deliberate on 19 June 2008 to determine the three recipients of the Awards. The winners will then be announced at a formal ceremony on 7 August 2008 following 2008 Ateneo Art Awards: Zones of Influence, an exhibition of the works of the short-listed artists at the Grand Atrium, Shangri-la Mall, Mandaluyong City, from 1 - 11 August 2008. # # #

REHISTRORIKA

"Our time is so short and the future so terrifyingly long. Through the art of brush, pen, and lens ... we possess a swift and sure means of touching the conscience and clearing the vision."

-- Ansel Adams

In his first solo exhibit, Kirby Roxas, a much-awarded contemporary artist, focuses on the plight of minorities.   REHISTRORIKA reexamines, rethinks and reconsiders.  It is a visual rhetoric on the disconcerting neglect of a portion of our country’s population that has resulted in discrimination, inequality and miseducation.  He directs his reevaluation on the economic difficulties and social disparities and queries on their existence.

Roxas searched through archival photographs and illustrations from the 20th century and his personal photo collection to acquire the supportive imagery to put forth his message.  The artist utilizes these images in conjunction with specific symbolic devices.   Coupled with his distinct stylistic refiguration and pixelation, the resultant works provoke our concerns while uplifting our aesthetic faculties.

The fact that this collection is rendered in gray scale further reinforces the indeterminate and somber attitudes generated by the prevailing systemic imbalance.  Each painting is an encodement waiting to be decoded.  It challenges our positions into an artistic paradox – pushing us away a certain distance for a fuller appreciation whilst beckoning us closer to view its gradation and detail.

Roxas intentionally made use of letters, numbers, words and phrases interspersed and interplayed with his own visual language that gave rise to enigmatic works awaiting encryption.  The tension created through his visual dialogue goes beyond the canvas — it suspends and stimulates, articulates and questions as it blurs to clarify.

REHISTRORIKA is a provocative visual anthology that contextualizes the minorities’ concerns through gestalt forms and figurations.  Kirby Roxas causes us to squint in order to perceive – there is more than meets the eye in both the artist and his artistry.

(write-up by Marika Constantino)

Kirby Roxas’ 1st solo exhibition is presented by Britania Art Projects.  It will open on May 24, 2008 at 6 p.m. in Boston Gallery, located at #72 Boston St., Cubao, Quezon City. For inquiries please call 387-6373 / mobile 09178070327 or email britania.artprojects@gmail.com

slash/art artists' initiatives cordially invites you all to "Kamunduhan, "the 2nd solo exhibit by Lotus Manes.

slash/art artists' initiatives is an artist-led organization that works on conceptualizing, organizing and sustaining independent art projects in cooperation with various entities (project-slash-art; thus slash/art).

slash/art is a creative and strategic exercise to explore the potency of art as medium and means to bring artists, cultural institutions and audiences into dynamic collaborations.

LOTSU MANES

Kamunduhan

Blanc

May 12-31, 2008

Opening at Blanc at 6:00 pm, May 12, is the second solo exhibit by figurative artist Lotsu Manes.   “Kamunduhan” is a series of works that attempts to literally re-present the subject of globalization through familiar elements, with the result, nonetheless, of bringing the issues into a meditative sphere.

By utilizing realism’s power to unravel iconic scenarios from everyday objects, Manes attempts to fuse two perspectives: the sundry of domesticity as seen by a typical father, and the musings of an observer of social realities partly distilled from mass media.

This play on reality is conveyed quite literally with a thing common to nurseries and classrooms: the inflatable globe, that piece of  plastic used as representation of the world.  A child easily encounters the twin functions of this object altogether: it is both a teaching tool for the rudiments of geography, and a plaything for all sorts of imaginings.  Truly a laudable invention for the stimulation of left and right brain functions.

In Manes’ hands, these dualities are transfigured into probing, even precarious imaginings, even if the scenes never entirely bids farewell to a child’s precept of the inflatable globe.  This series of works are undeniably pleasing to the eye, but nonetheless lays the ground for sober reflections on play, players and playthings as they figure in the world of the home and into the larger vistas of global politics and environmental concerns.

Lotsu Manes received early recognition in 1996 when he garnered First Prize at the Shell National Student’s Art Competition.   He is a core member of TutoK, the initiative of visual artists formed in 2006.  He has also participated in the restoration of masterpieces by Carlos V. Francisco, Juan Luna and Jose Joya as senior apprentice for Art Conservation and Restoration Specialists (ACES).

“Kamunduhan” is a project presented at Blanc in cooperation with slash/art artists’ initiatives.    The exhibit will proceed till May 31.  Blanc is located at 2E Crown Tower 107 H.V. De La Costa Street, Salcedo Village, Makati City.  For inquiries, please contact tel. 02.7520032, mobile 0920.9276436, email info@blanc.ph or visit the website at www.blanc.ph

Lindsey James Lee
“The Shifting of Reality in Lindslee’s Abstraction”
The Drawing Room
April 12, 2008 – May 3, 2008

Slated on April 12, 2008 at The Drawing Room, Makati City, abstractionist and taxidermy artist Lindsey “Lindslee” James Lee challenges the normative concept of abstract art in his suite of provocative paintings and installations with thematic title “Figuring Abstraction”.

As an artist of magnificent vision, Lindslee questions the parameters of abstraction, goes beyond its conventional form, and redefines his own modal structure of art making. He proposes, vis-à-vis, a dialectical concept of what it could become as a symbolic entity in contrast to the pre-conceived reality of art as a genre in-itself and for-itself.

The unity of his artistic vision and concept culminate not from mere painting the surface of his canvas, but by integrating and fusing one or more aesthetic mediums into his art.

The resultant images of his works generate a magnificent force of symbolic meaning; transcending and magnifying concrete realities so that the viewers may meditate upon their own realities amid their changing society.

For details, please call Tel. Nos. +632 897-7877, 632 897-6990. The Drawing Room is located at GF., Metrostar Bldg., 1007 Metropolitan Avenue, Makati City.

PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON "SPOTLIGHT DILEMMA"

April 24 marks the opening of Tatong Recheta Torres' sophomore
offering "Spotlight Dilemma," an exhibition of his works in oil. In no
way sophomoric and now injected with renewed vigor that leans toward
the fantastic, his second show sheds none of the quiet enigma that has
dominated "Dominion," his previous one.

Keeping narrativity at the service of painting, Torres portrays a
modest parable in the morbid tradition of fairy tales: The insatiable
Supreme Collector now desires to also collect attention, and has found
reason to seize it from The Fairest of Them All. But being an albino
whose eyes cannot withstand brightness, how can she struggle with
being in the spotlight? This constitutes the main story of "Spotlight
Dilemma," which splinters into subplots fabricated by the artist's
labyrinthine imagination, and further textually fleshed out by Angelo
V. Suarez in accompanying vignettes of printed story.

As a visual fairy tale, the show acquires a didactic quality not only
characteristic of parables, but of Surrealism as an artistic movement
as well--which is an obvious influence to Torres' work. But while
"Spotlight Dilemma" possesses the subdued eeriness of Surrealist
precursor Giorgio de Chirico's pittura metafisica, its wild narrative
coherence is more indebted to the strain of magic realism familiar to
lovers of H.P. Lovecraft. Another way of saying it: the show may be a
magic realist parable, but it advocates surrealistic morals.

Which isn't to say that Torres' oeuvre is grim and humorless.
Supported by Suarez's texts, Torres' show is at times bawdy, wrenching
together the comic idiom of Palibhasa Lalake and that of early Woody
Allen, giving them a fantastic spin. Underneath the apparent
monochrome of his paintings (the lead characters being albinos, the
whites and blacks are only occasionally punctuated by color) lies a
narrative pastiche of dissonant allusions and illusions, waiting to be
reconciled and reworked together by the bewildered audience.

#

Tatong Recheta Torres' "Spotlight Dilemma" opens on April 24, 2007 at
Hiraya Gallery.
